Removing Wrinkles from a Wool Coat

Wool coats are not only a stylish and elegant choice for winter, but also a durable and timeless investment. However, when folded or crumpled up for long periods of time, a wool coat can get wrinkled.

Fear not! Wrinkles are easily removed with these easy techniques below.

1.) Hang to Release Wrinkles:
If your wool coat has minor wrinkles, hanging it properly can help them naturally release. Choose a sturdy and wide coat hanger that supports the shape of the coat's shoulders. Gently shake the coat to allow the fabric to relax, and let it hang in a cool, dry place for a day or two. Gravity will help the wool fibers settle, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Avoid cramming the coat in a tight space or folding it, as this can lead to deeper creases.

2.) Steam Away the Wrinkles:
One of the most effective ways to remove wrinkles from a wool coat is by using steam. Hang your coat in a well-ventilated area, such as a bathroom with a closed door, and turn on the hot shower. The steam created will gently relax the wool fibers, allowing the wrinkles to smooth out. You can use a garment steamer, carefully holding it a few inches away from the fabric and moving it in a sweeping motion. Remember to avoid direct contact between the steamer and the coat to prevent water spotting.

3. Iron away wrinkles:
Wool can be ironed. Trust me I know. During the process of turning wool fabric into a wool coat, the fabric is ironed often in order to get it to retain its shape. However, hard pressing at a high temperature is not good for wool and can create stubborn creasing if done excessively. Use a light a touch when ironing and wool temperature setting on your iron. The steam function on your iron will also help you move through the wrinkles quickly.

4. Professional Steaming or Pressing:
If you're uncertain about handling the wrinkles yourself or have deep-set wrinkles, it's best to seek professional help. Professional dry cleaners often offer steaming or pressing services specifically designed for wool garments. They have the expertise and specialized equipment to handle delicate fabrics and remove stubborn wrinkles effectively.

Wrinkles should never dull the look of your wool coat. By using gentle techniques such as hanging, steaming, and light ironing, you can effortlessly restore your coat's polished appearance. By caring for your wool coat, you can add years to its' appearance and life.
